Autumn: Preparing the Land for Renewal

Autumn Awakening: Preparing the Land for Renewal at PurposeFlow

As the relentless heat of summer softens and the first cool breezes sweep across the Portuguese landscape, PurposeFlow enters a season of transformation, Autumn. Here, in Europe’s driest regions, this not a time of mere retreat and letting go, but rather a vibrant invitation to become architects of renewal! The land, once parched and sun-baked, begins to whisper its readiness for rejuvenation, and with it, a collective excitement stirs within our community.

While autumn is a time for slowing down in many places, here at PurposeFlow it is a season of energetic engagement, a time when community bonds are strengthened through shared labor, laughter, and learning actively on the land. We honor the natural cycles by balancing action with reflection, ensuring that our interventions are guided by both ecological wisdom and the rhythms of the land.

From Stillness to Action

Autumn at PurposeFlow is a paradoxical dance. While nature gently signals a slowing down, our hands and hearts quicken. The air is charged with the possibility of new beginnings. After months of conserving energy and water, we are ready to step into the landscape with purpose, to lay the foundations for the coming rains and the next cycle of growth.

Becoming Architects of the Land

With the coming of the rains, the land becomes more hospitable, an open canvas for our regenerative dreams. This is the time when we prepare, plan, and plant:

  • Seed Sowing & Preparation: Autumn is our season of intention. We gather, sort, and prepare seeds, both native and drought-resilient, carefully selecting varieties that will ideally do more than survive and possible thrive in the unique rhythms of our ecosystem.
  • **Designing Water Retention Systems:**The anticipation of the first rains fuels our work. Last autumn, our community dug over one hundred water retention structures, charcos and a biodiversity pond. These features capture and hold the precious rain water, slowing runoff, replenishing groundwater, and creating microclimates where life can flourish.
  • **Pond Project & Landscape Sculpting:**This season, we will continue to embark our pond project, envisioning a living water system that will serve as both a sanctuary for biodiversity and a reservoir for resilience during the summer months.
  • Earth Berms: raised mounts of earth, twigs and other organic material that we spread across the land, working with countour lines, that slow down water and collect sediments.

All this work is done over many cycles, guided through principles, observation , learning and even experts in several fields. Check out https://www.terrahabil.com/pt/inicio for a team of incredible ecologists and let them know you came through us.

Honoring What Is, Nurturing What Can Be

Autumn is also a time of deep observation, research and hands on work. We walk the land, identifying native species and mapping their presence. Our goal is to support what already thrives, to learn from the wisdom embedded in these survivors of drought and heat and to experiment with new and old techniques of restoration to bring about the resilience, change and abundance we wish to see in this land. In a region where ecological research is scarce, our work becomes both practical stewardship and pioneering inquiry, contributing valuable insights to the broader field of Mediterranean restoration.

Practical Tips for Autumn Land Preparation in Dry Regions:

  1. Start Seed Preparation Early: Choose native and drought-resilient species. Pre-soak hard seeds or use scarification to boost germination.
  2. Design Water Retention Structures: Assess your land’s contours and plan charcos, bunds, and ponds before the rains arrive. P.s. Be careful with making swales as the cons of swales can do more damage than good and they might not even be needed.
  3. Mulch Generously: Protect soil with organic matter to retain moisture and prevent erosion.
  4. Observe and Map Native Flora: Identify and support existing species—these are your best teachers.
  5. Document and Research: Keep detailed records of interventions, rainfall, and plant growth to refine your practices and contribute to local knowledge. We use a 5-1 Weather station to help us understand our microclimate.

Autumn in Portugal at the nature restoration Project and community PurposeFlow is a season of hope, creativity, and grounded action. It is when we step deeper into our role as co-creators with nature. As the rains return and the earth awakens, we witness the fruits of our labor, proof that, even in the driest places, the cycles of life and restoration are possible.
